In response to the publication of Lord Darzi’s Independent Investigation of the National Health Service in England Jeevan Gunaratnam, AXREM Chair Statement on behalf of AXREM

“The findings of Lord Darzi’s investigation highlight a NHS in critical condition, facing challenges from workforce shortages to long waiting times, coupled with declining patient satisfaction. Against this stark backdrop, I welcome Lord Darzi’s candour and transparency throughout the report as a key step towards rebuilding public trust and confidence in the NHS.

AXREM recently hosted a parliamentary event to launch our Strategic Priorities for 2025 – 2027 and I am reassured by the strong alignment between our priorities and the findings of this investigation, namely:

  • Whether through increasing uptake of screening programmes or reducing waiting times for cancer or cardiovascular care, there is a strong focus throughout the report on patient safety and reducing excess deaths
  • The report frequently highlights the role of technology in improving outcomes and the need to replace crumbling buildings and outdated scanners
  • The power of digital health transformation to influence future healthcare delivery including a much needed shift from ‘diagnose and treat’ to ‘predict and prevent’
  • A significant shortfall in capital investment which underpins our industry’s capacity to partner and align with NHS priorities
  • Reassurance that there is no trade-off between climate responsibilities and reducing waiting lists. I look forward to AXREM helping deliver a sustainable future net-zero NHS through partnership and collaboration with providers

I note Lord Darzi’s observation about locking in care closer to home coupled with hardwired financial flows. AXREM would like to see additional commentary around the role of an expanded CDC programme to support delivery of diagnostic care closer to home and clarity around the financial flows that could support future remote monitoring and early discharge programmes. Given the key role of digital transformation in driving patient engagement and productivity, I would also welcome further statements regarding the management of risks such as cyber-security in an increasingly connected healthcare system.

Work will now start on a forthcoming 10-year health plan. AXREM represents over 70 NHS suppliers working at the cutting edge of technology, including AI. I welcome the opportunity for AXREM to support and contribute to the 10-year health plan and thus ensure the NHS can rightfully claim to be the leading global healthcare provider.
