AXREM Publishes Patient Monitoring Paper Supporting Delivery of the NHS 10 Year Plan
21 May 2026
AXREM has published a new Patient Monitoring Paper, “Patient Monitoring: Alignment to the NHS 10 Year Plan’s Three Shifts”, setting out how patient monitoring technologies can play a critical role in delivering the future vision for healthcare across England.
Developed by AXREM’s Patient Monitoring Special Focus Group (SFG), the paper demonstrates how industry-led innovation and collaboration can support the NHS’ three strategic shifts from hospital to community, analogue to digital, and sickness to prevention through greater adoption of connected monitoring technologies.
Supporting the Shift from Hospital to Community
The NHS 10 Year Plan outlines a clear ambition to move care closer to home. AXREM’s paper highlights how patient monitoring technologies are already enabling this transition.
Remote and out‑of‑hospital monitoring solutions including telemetry, wearable devices and virtual ward technologies allow patients to be safely monitored beyond traditional care settings. These approaches support earlier discharge, reduce pressure on hospital beds, and enable more equitable access to care across different regions.
Enabling the Shift from Analogue to Digital
Digital transformation is central to the NHS’ future model of care. The paper emphasises the importance of interoperability and infrastructure in unlocking the full value of patient monitoring technologies. AXREM’s Patient Monitoring Manifesto places connectivity at its core, advocating for seamless integration between bedside monitors, wearables, telemetry systems and Electronic Patient Records. By enabling real‑time data flows and digitised clinical pathways, monitoring technologies can support faster clinical decision‑making, reduce administrative burden and optimise workforce capacity.
Driving the Shift from Sickness to Prevention
The paper also underscores the vital role of patient monitoring in supporting a more preventative healthcare model. Continuous monitoring, both in hospitals and in the community, enables earlier detection of patient deterioration, helping to avoid unnecessary admissions and improve outcomes. By combining innovation with economic value, AXREM highlights how better monitoring can reduce length of stay, prevent critical events and deliver long‑term efficiency savings across the health system.
The Role of the Patient Monitoring Special Focus Group
AXREM’s Patient Monitoring SFG brings together leading suppliers of monitoring technologies across the care continuum, from high‑acuity hospital environments to community and home settings. The group’s work is guided by the “4 C’s” framework: Consistency, Connectivity, Care Innovation and Cash Savings, which underpins its contribution to national policy, system design and technology adoption.
Through this collaboration, AXREM is ensuring that the expertise of industry plays a central role in shaping scalable, interoperable and patient‑centred monitoring solutions aligned with NHS priorities.
A Clear Call to Action
The paper sets out two key recommendations to accelerate progress:
- A National Interoperable Patient Monitoring Framework to support consistent adoption, integration and delivery of monitoring technologies across the NHS
- A Simplified and Standardised Route to Market to reduce duplication, minimise administrative burden and enable faster uptake of clinically proven solutions
Together, these measures would support a more agile, digitally enabled procurement environment and ensure that innovation can be deployed at scale to benefit patients and clinicians.
AXREM Patient Monitoring SFG Vice Convenor, David Britton said:
“I am delighted to present our three big shifts in strategic alignment on behalf of our AXREM membership.
Industry is keen to align ourselves to the demands of the NHS by supplying relevant solutions and innovation to support transformation within our health service.
Our three key areas are:
- Supporting the move from hospital to community
- Accelerate the move from analogue to digital through meaningful data transfer to our clinicians
- Supporting the move from treatment to prevention – early intervention saves lives
Our industry is proud to support our healthcare system improve patient outcomes.”
AXREM CEO, Sally Edgington said:
“The NHS has been clear about the scale of transformation required over the next decade and patient monitoring is one of the most powerful enablers of that change. Our new position document shows how AXREM members are already supporting the shift towards more connected, preventative and community‑based care, while highlighting where national action is now essential.
By working in partnership with NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care, we can accelerate adoption of interoperable, standards‑based monitoring solutions that strengthen patient safety, improve system efficiency and deliver meaningful value for the health service. AXREM and our Patient Monitoring Special Focus Group stand ready to support this work and help ensure the NHS is equipped for the future.”
Supporting a Modern, Connected Healthcare System
AXREM’s paper concludes that patient monitoring is a key enabler of a modern healthcare system, one that is digitally integrated, standardised across settings, and focused on prevention as well as treatment.
By aligning industry innovation with national priorities, AXREM continues to support the NHS in building a more resilient, efficient and patient‑centred future.
