Artificial Intelligence (AI) Special Focus Group

The AXREM AI Special Focus Group continues to lead the conversation around responsible, scalable, and patient-centred adoption of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Building on our foundational work, the group has recently published the AXREM AI Manifesto, a sector-wide call to action urging policymakers, NHS leadership, and AI developers to collaborate on clear, consistent innovation pathways that reduce duplication, balance risk, and maximise clinical benefit.

In addition to our member-led discussions, AXREM now facilitates a cross-sector AI Think Tank, a collaborative forum that brings together external organisations with a shared interest in AI deployment across the NHS. This includes representation from MHRA, DHSC, NHS England, NICE, NHS Supply Chain, RCR, SoR, BIR, IPEM, BMUS, and many others. The Think Tank provides a trusted space to explore challenges and opportunities around upscaling, standardisation, validation, and interoperability ensuring that AI solutions are safe, effective, and aligned with NHS priorities.

Our current priorities, as outlined in the AI Manifesto, include:

  • Scalable Adoption: Supporting the NHS to deploy AI at pace and scale, without compromising safety or quality
  • Reducing Duplication: Advocating for streamlined compliance and validation processes across regions and systems
  • Balanced Risk Management: Encouraging proportionate governance that enables innovation while safeguarding patients
  • Standardised Evaluation: Promoting consistent frameworks for assessing AI performance, outcomes, and clinical impact
  • Cross-sector Collaboration: Building bridges between suppliers, regulators, clinicians, and NHS bodies to ensure joined-up thinking
  • Education and Transparency: Supporting clear communication and shared learning around AI capabilities and limitations

The AXREM AI Special Focus Group remains committed to shaping a future where AI enhances diagnostic accuracy, improves workflows, and delivers real-world benefits for patients and professionals alike.
