AXREM Digital Pathology Manifesto

Digital Pathology is a key enabler of modern diagnostic services, supporting improved diagnostic accuracy, more efficient workflows and better collaboration across pathology networks. It also provides the essential digital foundation for the safe and effective use of artificial intelligence in histopathology.

AXREM’s Digital Pathology Manifesto sets out a clear vision for accelerating the adoption of Digital Pathology across the NHS. While the technology is proven and already in use in parts of the system, progress remains uneven due to infrastructure limitations, lack of interoperability, workforce pressures and inconsistent access to training and funding.

As the UK trade association representing suppliers of diagnostic imaging, healthcare IT and AI technologies, AXREM members deliver the systems and platforms that underpin Digital Pathology, including whole slide imaging, image management systems and secure digital infrastructure.

The manifesto calls for coordinated national action to support investment in digital infrastructure, establish clear standards for interoperability and image quality, embed Digital Pathology into training and professional development, and ensure sustainable funding models that enable long term adoption.

Through collaboration between industry, clinicians and policymakers, AXREM believes Digital Pathology can play a vital role in strengthening diagnostic services, supporting the pathology workforce and improving outcomes for patients across the NHS.
