On the morning of Monday 12th July, AXREM Director, Sally Edgington travelled to Barnet Hospital which is part of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust to present Emma Tarpey, Clinical Manual Handling Advisor with her award announced at the AXREM UKIO Virtual Awards last month.

Emma won the Clinical Individual who went above and beyond during COVID Award sponsored by Fujifilm, and before announcing the winner Bill Turnbull, journalist and presenter said many of the people nominated for this award worked on the front line during the pandemic to diagnose and treat people with life threatening symptoms of the virus. We all saw the images on the news of the unprecedented conditions our NHS staff worked under. Bills said that he wishes that we could have awarded the whole of the NHS but we did have to choose one winner, but before the winner was announced Bill passed AXREM and his own thanks for everything the NHS did over the last 18 months.

On announcing Emma Tarpey as the winner, Bill Turnbull explained the reason she had won the award was because Emma was working part time when the pandemic hit and immediately increased her working hours to full time to provide additional support to the clinical and rehabilitation teams in anticipation of a significant increase in complex patients with special manual handling needs. During the surge it was found that many Covid 19 patients achieved better outcomes from spending long periods in a prone position. The majority of Covid 19 patients in critical care were overweight or obese making proning harder and riskier for staff. Emma took it upon herself to start a programme of training clinical staff to enable them to safely prone high-risk cases. She has run dozens of manual handling training sessions directly related to the Covid 19 response, training more than 250 staff in her Trust. Emma has been described in 3 words as patient-focused, Proactive and Caring.

Upon being presented with the award Emma Tarpey said “Thank you AXREM, and the sponsors that made these awards possible. It is fantastic to be able recognise the great work that has been done by so many during the last year and amazing to win such an incredible award, thank you!”.

AXREM Director, Sally Edgington said “I cannot imagine the conditions in which NHS staff have continued to work under during this pandemic, and the changes they have adopted in their working conditions, but like many people I am extremely grateful. Emma’s initiative has created a positive impact for her colleagues but also provided exceptional patient care ensuring the best possible outcomes, I was very humbled to meet Emma and be able to present her with this well-deserved award”.
