The State of the Stroke Pathway in the NHS

The State of the Stroke Pathway in the NHS: Challenges and Solutions through AI, Advanced CT Imaging, and Teleradiology – An Industry Perspective.

To mark World Stroke Day 2025, AXREM has published The State of the Stroke Pathway in the NHS: Challenges and Solutions through AI, Advanced CT Imaging, and Teleradiology – An Industry Perspective. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of stroke care performance across the UK, revealing that despite national initiatives, progress has plateaued and significant regional disparities persist. With more than 100,000 new stroke cases each year and incidence expected to rise by 50% by 2035, the report highlights the urgent need for innovation and investment. Drawing on audit data from across the NHS, AXREM outlines the key gaps in the current system — from delayed hospital arrival and imaging times to limited access to specialist treatment — and emphasises the growing strain on clinical resources.

The paper sets out AXREM’s evidence-based recommendations for transforming stroke care through technology and collaboration. It explores how artificial intelligence, multimodal CT imaging, and teleradiology can reduce delays, expand access to expert diagnosis, and deliver more equitable outcomes nationwide. AXREM calls on NHS leaders and policymakers to act decisively in embedding these technologies across Integrated Stroke Delivery Networks, supported by workforce investment and national coordination. By doing so, the UK can ensure timely, high-quality stroke care for every patient, regardless of location, and significantly improve survival and recovery outcomes.
