Teleradiology: A Vital Partner in Modern NHS Care

AXREM Teleradiology Position Paper
Teleradiology is an established and increasingly important part of modern NHS imaging services. As demand for diagnostic imaging continues to grow and workforce pressures intensify, it provides a scalable, patient-centred approach that supports timely access to high-quality reporting and helps maintain continuity of care.
AXREM’s Position Paper sets out how teleradiology works in partnership with NHS teams to strengthen local services, improve resilience and support better outcomes for patients. It outlines the principles required to ensure teleradiology is delivered safely, effectively and in alignment with NHS values.
Why it matters
Rising imaging volumes, reporting backlogs and uneven access to specialist expertise present ongoing challenges across the NHS. Teleradiology helps address these pressures by enabling faster turnaround of imaging reports, supporting seven-day and out-of-hours services, and improving access to subspecialist reporting where it is most needed.
When integrated effectively, teleradiology plays a vital role in supporting critical clinical pathways, including cancer, stroke and trauma care, helping to reduce delays in diagnosis and treatment.
Supporting services and the workforce
Teleradiology is not a replacement for in-house radiology teams. Used appropriately, it complements local services by alleviating pressure on departments, balancing workloads and providing additional resilience during periods of peak demand, staff shortages or system-wide pressures.
It also supports more flexible working models for radiologists, contributing to wellbeing, retention and sustainability of the workforce.
A collaborative approach
AXREM is committed to improving understanding of teleradiology’s role across the NHS and addressing misconceptions through collaboration, quality and transparency. Through its Working Group, AXREM promotes high standards of clinical governance, consistency in procurement and closer working between NHS trusts, suppliers and service users.
Together, we can ensure teleradiology continues to support patients, professionals and providers across the NHS.
