IPEM & AXREM join forces to share opportunities and knowledge

The capacity to share events, professional knowledge, and collaboration for those working in healthcare science across the sector has been accelerated through a new strategic partnership.

A memorandum of understanding between the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) and AXREM, the UK trade association representing suppliers of diagnostic medical imaging, radiotherapy, healthcare IT and care equipment in the UK, will formalise already strong working relationships between the two organisations. The partnership will see joint promotion of events as well as other opportunities to engage on a range of projects, including IPEM’s Science Leadership Strategy with the aim of driving transformative professional development across the sector.

IPEM is the professional body and charity representing more than 4,600 medical physicists, clinical and bio-medical engineers, and clinical technologists from across public and private sector healthcare, academia and industry who play vital roles in delivering healthcare through physics and engineering.

AXREM is the UK trade association representing the interests of suppliers of diagnostic medical imaging, radiotherapy, healthcare IT and care equipment including patient monitoring in the UK. Our group is comprised of most of the industry supply companies. AXREM members supply most diagnostic medical imaging and radiotherapy equipment installed in UK hospitals. In doing so, AXREM member companies and their employees work side by side with Radiologists, Radiographers and Practitioners, Oncologists and a wide range of healthcare professionals in delivering healthcare to patients using their technologies.

Since 2021, the two bodies have worked together informally, as well as through channels such as the Imaging and Oncology Forum. The new agreement will focus on events, sharing knowledge and building closer relationships up to and including board level.

IPEM President Dr Rob Farley welcomed the new agreement, saying: “It will provide a framework for better joint working based initially around events, bringing industry, NHS, and academia together to deliver benefits for the members and wider professions we serve. We have successfully worked informally with AXREM for a number of years, so this new partnership will formalise some of those efforts to engage as widely as possible to the benefit of members of both organisations. I am looking forward to seeing what we can do together.’

Some members help to ensure patients are correctly diagnosed and safely treated for illnesses such as cancer and stroke through their work on imaging and radiotherapy. Others develop, maintain and manage medical equipment such as MRI and ultrasound scanners, X-ray machines, drug delivery systems and patient monitors. All are committed to transforming health through the application of physics and engineering.
