Reinvigorating Innovation: What the UK Government’s Industrial Strategy (Published 23rd June 2025) Means for HealthTech and AXREM
In the shadow of a strained NHS and evolving global health landscape, the UK Government’s refreshed Industrial Strategy presents a timely moment of opportunity & responsibility for the health sector. For AXREM and its members, this isn’t just policy jargon; it’s a call to action, investment & transformation.
From Strategy to System Shift
The pillars of the Industrial Strategy: science and innovation, skills, infrastructure, business environment and local growth, resonate deeply with the challenges and aspirations of the UK’s medical imaging, radiotherapy and diagnostic technology industries. At its heart the strategy seeks to position the UK as a science & tech superpower. But for this vision to materialise in our hospitals and diagnostic centres, HealthTech must be prioritised not just as a contributor, but as a cornerstone of systemic change.
AXREM’s Mandate in a Modernised Industrial Framework
AXREM members are already advancing capabilities in AI diagnostics, cybersecurity and 3D printing for personalised care. The Industrial Strategy offers a crucial framework to accelerate these efforts, particularly through targeted R&D funding, innovation accelerators & collaborative regional clusters.
We must now champion industrial policy that recognises diagnostics and radiotherapy as not merely adjuncts to treatment, but as economic drivers and patient critical interventions. This requires cross-sector commitment to long-term planning: infrastructure investment that enables modern imaging, procurement policies that reward innovation and sustainability and a skills pipeline equipped for digital and automated technologies.
Harnessing HealthTech for Economic and Social Value
HealthTech is more than a growth sector, it is a catalyst for improved patient outcomes, workforce efficiency and system resilience. By embedding health technology priorities into local growth agendas and devolved innovation funding the Government can support smarter, more equitable care models across the UK.
AXREM and its network are uniquely placed to bridge policy and practice. We have the insight to inform strategy, the technological foresight to shape future services and the collaborative culture to support integrated solutions that meet the UK’s most pressing healthcare and productivity challenges.
Closing the Gap Between Vision and Delivery
Success lies in execution. For HealthTech to thrive under the Industrial Strategy, there must be coherence between central planning and real world needs, between what industry can deliver and what frontline services demand. AXREM’s voice, representing the companies that design, deploy and sustain critical technologies, is essential in making that bridge.
This strategy can mark a turning point, if we’re bold enough to lead. AXREM is ready.
